Hi folks!

Robotics-Reality.com is closing down and will be reborn as RoboAgenda.com in early 2014.

The new site will focus more specifically on the problems we are facing at the dawn of the Rise of the Robots, and attempt to find solutions that don't throw the baby out with the bathwater!

Hope to see you over at the new domain once I have it all set up!

Lego Mindstorms EV3!

I have to admit, it's been hard to find time to play with my Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0 since I got it. And the all NEW Lego Mindstorms EV3 is already available and set to take over in the world of home hobby robotics.

Here's the introductory video by Lego:

Video: Camilla Bottke

Don't worry though if you feel that you can't keep up with all the upgrades. When you're ready to treat yourself to the EV3, which retails for about 350 dollars, you'll find that it's fully backwards compatible with your old NXT 2.0. That's double the fun as you build your Lego Mindstorms empire!

Here's a run down of all the EV3's capabilities by CNET.

Site Design Upgrade!

You may have noticed some building dust recently on the site. Bear with me as I upgrade the Robotics Reality site to a modern two column design.

Robotics Reality Homepage Screenshot

As well as larger, easier to read text and full width images and video, I'll be adding all the "bells and whistles", as I like to call them!

This includes a monthly newsletter, updated sharing and commenting options, a search feature and Your Pages where you can add your own content!

The site redesign and upgrade shouldn't take much longer. Then I can get back to adding more content, starting new exciting sections like The Robotics Reality Lego Mindstorms Club, Top Ten Lists, Space Robots, Medical Robots and much much more!

Hope you like it!

Cool New Robot Movies Coming To A Big Screen Near YOU!

How's this for the next instalment of cool robot movies or films with cool robots IN them...

Video: Sony Pictures

Matt Damon takes us on a roller coaster ride in the upcoming release, Elysium. A dystopian sci-fi future thriller where robots and cyborgs give Matt Damon's character a hard time. The twist? He has to get all cyborged up himself to take on the oppresive control system. He does this by fusing with a rudimentary but competent exoskeleton. Can't wait to see this flick by District Nine director Neill Blomkamp. Some of the most realistic representation of humanoid security robots I've seen in a movie.

Next up...

Pacific Rim

Video: Warner Bros UK Trailers

Giant robot mecha extravaganza from Guillermo del Toro. Human-piloted, robotic giants face Earth-invading monsters. Need I say more?

And at some point...

Directed by Spielberg and based on the book by Daniel H. Wilson. Set for 2014 release. Not sure what Spielberg will do with this and I have yet to read the book but looking forward to both.

DARPA Robotics Challenge Proves Humanoid Robot Future?

Have a look at what DARPA has in store for you! For all the humanoid skeptics out there, I urge you to pay attention to where the money and research is flowing when it comes to the next stage in practical robotics technology. If DARPA and all the major labs involved in the DARPA Robotics Challenge succeed with their goals, then you can expect humanoid robots and other biomimetic robotic forms to really begin to take off as a viable, multi-purpose platform in the near future.

NASA Mars Rover Curiosity Successfully Lands On Red Planet!

After its interplanetary trip that lasted eight and a half months, Curiosity, Nasa's one tonne, unmanned robotic rover, successfully carried out its final approach and seven minute long, nail-biting descent to finally plop down on the surface of Mars.

Check out the amazing landing sequence animation below...

Video: JPLnews

Nasa's Mars Rover, Curiosity is now located near the base of Mount Sharp inside Gale Crater and performing its preliminary health checks and has already sent back some colour images of the Mars landscape!

The 2.5 billion dollar program for scientific exploration using a robotic device aims to delve deeper into the possibility that Mars may have once had microbial lifeforms inhabiting its surface.

It'll be interesting to follow Curiosity's progress as it carries out its mission over the next year or so. These robotic mobile science laboratories loaded with sophisticated equipment are only the beginning of what promises to be a bright future for space robots and interplanetary scientific investigation.

The Robot Touch

Robots that can feel! It was only a matter of time (and awesome ingenuity) before robots surpassed humans in the realm of the five senses! This BioTac sensor "finger" uses "Bayesian exploration for intelligent identification of textures" and was developed by researchers at the University of California’s Viterbi School of Engineering. This is just another example of the kinds of breakthroughs that will transform the robotics technology landscape and increase the number of ways that machines can continue to displace human workers. Just think of the enormous potential inherent in the ability for robots to "know" what they are holding or interacting with through sense of touch alone. Of course, when you combine a better-than-human sense of touch with it's equivalents in visual, sound and smell recognition and artificial intelligence, you start to wonder what all of this better-than-human tech will lead to. You have to admit, though, that prosthetics with "touch" would undeniably be a huge improvement over past models.

Heartland Robotics Is Now Rethink Robotics

I quite liked Heartland Robotics myself. It had a quaint homely feel about it, especially for a robotics technology company that promises to bring radical changes to the world of industrial robotics. My take on name changes, besides all the usual reasons, is that the company is possibly not meeting certain targets in a given time, whilst the rest of the world moves on. So they give their identity a refresh and hope that nobody notices! Anyway, I eagerly anticipate the first glimpses of these new SME robots that Mr. Rodney Brooks has promised to deliver some time later this year.
